Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne will be Neo and Trinity again in the fourth installment, directed and written on this occasion only by Lana Wachowski.

A fourth Matrix movie is now official and will bring together most of the original team. According to Variety, Warner Bros. has confirmed that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will play their Neo and Trinity roles again, while Lana Wachowski will write and direct the film.

"We couldn't be more excited to re-enter Matrix with Lana," Warner Bros. Picture Group president Toby Emmerich said in a statement. "Lana is a true visionary, a unique and original creative filmmaker, and we are delighted that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in the universe of 'The Matrix'."

The Matrix was created by Lana and her sister Lilly Wachowski, and the first film hit theaters 20 years ago in 1999. It quickly became a cultural phenomenon that generated two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (both written and directed) by the Wachowskis), as well as spin-offs like The Animatrix.

"Many of the ideas that Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I am very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another opportunity to work with my brilliant friends," said Lana. Wachowski in a statement.

In addition to Lana Wachowski, Matrix 4 will also be written by Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell, and produced by Grant Hill. Lilly Wachowski is remarkably absent from the Matrix 4 creative team.

According to sources, the production of Matrix 4 is expected to begin in early 2020.

Rumors that The Matrix 4 was happening have been revolving around Hollywood for more than a decade, and the most recent example was triggered earlier this year by director John Wick 3 (and Matrix specialist coordinator) Chad Stahelski. At that time, he said that the Wachowski was working on a new Matrix movie or series: "I am very happy that the Wachowski are not only making a new Matrix movie but are expanding what we all love," but the representative de Stahelski later claimed that the comments responded to a fourth "hypothetical" movie and said he did not confirm his participation. A month later, a new rumor claimed that the Wachowski would redirect and that Michael B. Jordan could star in it.

Nothing is known yet about Jordan's participation, but at least most of those recent reports and rumors turned out to be true. This announcement is scheduled for the 20th anniversary of The Matrix. Warner Bros. is already celebrating the anniversary of the Matrix by relaunching the 1999 film at the AMC Theaters at Dolby Cinema from August 30 to September 5 in the United States. (It has already been repeated earlier in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Ukraine).

What do you think about this news? Are you excited for a fourth Matrix movie, or did you want the trilogy to remain without continuation?
